The four-year project aims to undertake research and development of lithium-ions battery because the manufacturer wants to make them more competitive in terms of technology and price but they still need the approval by the German Cartel Office.

The new E-Up! Concept which was recently showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show will be the first car to receive these batteries in 2013, when Volkswagen want to launch it on the streets. For those who don’t know, this is not the first partnership for the German manufacturer, Vw is already working with Toshiba, Sanyo and China’s BYD on battery technology.
